Plan for surgery - heal quicker
John has studied the research around planning and preparing for surgery, and it clearly shows that when you prepare for surgery by using relaxation and hypnotherapy techniques, your healing is likely to be quicker. There are good reasons for this, not least of which is that when we’re relaxed, the immune system seems to function better, and this is central to the healing process. Studies have used simple cuts to illustrate the difference in healing times between a stressed person and a relaxed person, and the differences can be significant.

In the USA, health insurance companies pay for this type of approach before surgery because it cuts their costs down. In general it leads to less time in hospital, less side effects from the operation and less interventions needed. Everyone gains because the patient leaves hospital quicker and has a much more positive experience. During 2009 John is going to be looking at expanding his services in this area.

The Practice offers specialist help for anyone affected by MG who wants to enhance their relaxation.
Meeting Dr John Butler
At a conference at the Royal Society of Medicine, John was very pleased to meet Dr John Butler who specialises in hypnoanaesthesia (using hypnosis instead of, or as well as, a chemical anaesthetic). John has followed the career of Dr Butler with interest and believes that this area of hypnosis is vastly underused. In April 2006 Dr Butler was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary Hypnosurgery Live, where he helped a patient use hypnosis for a hernia operation, which was broadcast live. Dr Butler was a speaker at the conference.
Want a holiday but frightened of flying?
Even with the ban on planes flying with the volcanic ash, John is still getting a lot of people who want to go on holiday but who are fearful of flying. This is typical for this time of year when many of us plan for a getaway.

John comments: “The fear of flying is quite common. Often it’s really about the fear of ‘not being in control’, but sometimes it’s about other things too. Most people take just 2-3 sessions to enable them to fly off and enjoy their holiday. I have postcards from my clients from China, Australia, countries in Africa, USA and many places around the world. People are often surprised at how they actually enjoy their trip, which gives me a great deal of pleasure too.”
